Okulu Primary School

The Okulu Primary School is located in a village called Okulu in Torit, South Sudan.

The primary school was formally opened in 1987 about 5 kms away from the main road. At that time, the current headmaster Paul George Lokang was among the pupils and there were only six classes. During the war, the school was closed down due to lack of security. In 2006, after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed they reopened the school but this time they relocated it by the main road. The school now has 295 pupils and the school is registered with the GOSS Ministry of Education.

Currently they are operating under the trees with six classes but the community is still planning to put up a few structures for the pupils. During the rainy season were are no classes due to rain and no proper chairs or desks. Before the well was constructed water was a major challenge. Since the school had no source of clean water, so during class hours the pupils had to run home or to the nearest borehole, 1 km from the school premises when they were thirsty. This made it very difficult to study. The new well allows them to stay in school all day without interruption.
