Mother Teresa Nursery & Primary School

Mother Teresa’s Nursery School is located in the Gulu District and in Laroo Sub-County.It is a boarding school for deaf and disadvantaged children. It was set up by a Ugandan Nun and funded by group called the Lillian Foundation.

The school was started after UPDF soldiers found an abandoned child that they named Olal (which literally means ‘someone who got lost’). Olal was just 8 months old and had been abandoned. The soldiers brought him to the Nuns as there was nowhere else to take him. One of the nuns started looking after him and that inspired her to start the school. Most of the children are from the IDP camps. The majority have lost their parents either due to war or to disease. These children are made fun of at local area schools, but here they feel safe and at home.

Recently, in the area some children were kidnapped and dismembered for a ritual sacrifice. Because a lot of these children can not talk, they were easy targets. Now that the well is on school grounds and they no longer have to walk to get water, they are much safer.
