Erutu Community well

The Erutu community well is located in Odomai village, Ochocia Parish, Ogolai Sub County in Amuria District.

In rural communities there are several places where people get their water. The best are borehole wells, the worst are polluted water holes and ponds shared by animals. One common method people use to get water is the digging of what are called unprotected wells. An unprotected well is basically where the locals can tell by the plants and trees where there is likely to be water not too deep below the surface. They dig down until they hit this water source and people use it for water. The problem with unprotected sources is that the water is usually groundwater which is often contaminated by animals, untreated sewage and all kinds of other contaminants. The Erutu community has always got its water from unprotected sources. This has led to a high proportion of water related illnesses and deaths. In 2015, Drop in the Bucket was able to drill and install a sustainable and high yielding borehole seen as a miracle by the community members. When the villagers first saw the water they were happy and began singing and cheering. They knew the well would change their lives in may ways.
