Adwila Primary School

Located in the Adekokwok Sub-County of the Lira District of northern Uganda, Adwila Primary School has 966 pupils; 473 boys and 493 girls. The well was completed in May 2008.

Before we installed the well, there were two previous water sources, both located far from the school; a natural spring and a congested well. Children, especially girls, were often abused while obtaining drinking water there because of its distance. This problem often led to both poor attendance and performance at school but once the school had it’s own well, the problem no longer existed!

What is extraordinary about this particular project is that it was the first school to have a well entirely paid for by another school, located in the US. Drop in the Bucket’s “Kids Helping Kids” program received the donation from New York’s La Francis Hardiman School in Wyndandanch. The kindergarten through P2 children raised the funds by doing things such as drinking tap water instead of sodas and donating the money to Drop in the Bucket.
