Abuket Akwanga Community Well

The Abuket-Akwanga community well is located in Kyere Sub County of the Serere district in Uganda.

Before the intervention, the women of Abuket village were forced to use unsafe water from a nearby swamp that would dry up during dry season. When that happened the women had to walk 6 kilometers to the next village in search of water. This not only increased their daily workload but it also reduced the amount of time available for household chores.

Water and sanitation related diseases like typhoid, diarrhea, stomach parasites, and dysentery were common and claimed many lives especially so with the children. From the time the borehole was drilled the distance to the water source and time spent collecting water has been greatly reduced. Also instances of water borne diseases have also been reduced in the surrounding communities. The men of the community supported the project by constructing protective fencing for the well and managing the operation and maintenance of the hand pump.
