Awareness and Education

This girl in South Sudan just finished her class, but went back to make sure she understood the lesson. Awareness and Education

Awareness and Education

Although many people view Drop in the Bucket as a water charity, water is really just the first step. The next steps are sanitation, promoting gender equality and sustainability, but even these are still just steps towards our main goal which is moving communities out of poverty by providing access to education. A driving force and core theme of our mission is to enable youth to fully harness the life-changing power of an education. Providing water and sanitation are essential first steps, but it doesn’t end there. When we first started working in East Africa, we saw women and children walking to get water everywhere we went, and it was mainly girls who were the ones walking. Because they were walking such long distances, the task of fetching water was taking up hours of their day, every day. This left them little time for school. We found ourselves talking to girls who wished they could be in school, but were being denied the chance of at education because they had to fetch the family’s water. By building wells at schools, we make it possible for the girls to both get water and attend school at the same location.
