The village of Kayunga is 3km by 3km and the population is about 2500. It is located in Kamuli parish, Malangala Sub County in the Mityana district of central Uganda. The village’s location is situated on high ground and before the well its only water source was the local pond pictured in the slideshow on this page.
The village has 1500 children and 1000 adults. The village school is called St joseph Kamuli primary school and it is a Catholic church based community school. The school was founded by parents in the community who are still involved even though the school was taken over by the state 20 years ago.
There are pupils are 650 attending in the school including 50 orphans. The local community applied to the local water office for a well 5 years ago and are still waiting. Other than the pond the next source of water is 4kms away and it is an ordinary spring well. This is naturally occurring surface ground water and is not healthy or clean, but is better than the pond water.
