Lira Secondary School gets a solar pump

Back in 2008 Drop in the Bucket completed a full eco-sanitation system at Lira Secondary School in Uganda. The school has remained very organized and has taken excellent care of the well and toilets over the last few years. This was why we selected this school to be the first school where we installed a solar system instead of a hand pump. When we originally installed the well and toilets we used a roundabout pump.

We generally do not use roundabout pumps at Secondary Schools, but there were a lot of neighboring kids around to use the pump, so it remained working fine. Still it was not ideal and we made the decision a few months ago to try a solar pump. The school is ideal for solar as there is not much sade around the school and so it benefits from direct sun for most of the day. We also added a water tower with a large tank on top to store the water that gets pumped.

The project was a great success and we are very happy with the results.
