Some of you may remember reading about Leah Willensky the 12 year old girl that donated her birthday money to help children in Africa get clean water. That was over two years ago and Leah has never stopped caring and helping. Last year she donated her Bat Mitzvah money and set up a stall at the Larchmont Fair that sold canvas tote bags, bumper stickers, raised awareness and bottles of water generously donated by State of Mind Water. All of the proceeds from this went to Drop in the Bucket.
This year Leah got her entire school involved. She was elected student body president for the spring semester of 2009, and from her campaign speech, to her first priorities in office, to the programs she worked to carry out, she clearly articulated her vision of a major fundraising effort to bring clean water to schools in Africa. She helped educate students about the mission of Drop in the Bucket and earned their steadfast support, as the student council representatives voted unanimously to make DITB their philanthropic cause for spring 2009. Leah’s follow through resulted in successful fundraisng programs like the spring dance and the “penny wars” contest that helped make the spring 2009 student council donation the largest one in recent years.
The school made it a point of letting us know that all of the money raised came from the middle school students themselves and not from the teachers or parents.
Drop in the Bucket would like to extend a huge Thank You to all of the students from the Horace Mann School in Beverly Hills and especially to Leah Willensky.
