Gulu High School

Gulu High School currently has 1224 pupils, 706 boys and 518 girls. The school recently had a new water source installed. However, its toilets were still in a very bad state of disrepair, and the school urgently needed a better sanitation solution than more pit latrines.

In large schools, pit latrines fill up quickly and are not pumped out using trucks with sewage sump pumps, as they are in America. Here in rural Africa, toilets like these are just sealed up and abandoned, and new pit latrines are dug in another nearby location. Over time, as more toilets are built and abandoned, the schools end up with highly toxic areas on their property where pit latrines had been previously located.

Gulu High School now has a brand new Drop In The Bucket sanitation system consisting of a hand-washing station, ten flush toilets, and our eco-sanitation septic system. In the photos you can see the old toilets, which were in a falling-down structure made of corrugated iron. The last two pictures show the recently-completed new toilets.
