Building a well | Drop In The Bucket

This is the way 1.1 billion people get their water

These children will have to walk three miles carrying this water home

They have no choice as this is the only water available to them

Often their water is much closer, maybe only a few hundred feet away

But they have no way to access it without a well drilling rig

It takes on average two weeks for us to complete a well

If maintained properly wells can last indefinitely

Saving thousands of lives and affecting several generations health

Water related illness is the number one killer of children in Saharan Africa

Once the well is drilled an apron is built at the top of it

The apron directs spilled water away from the well which helps prevent malaria

And other diseases caused by pools of stagnant water that attract mosquitoes

The cement is meticulously shaped by hand

After it has been left to dry, the pump and pipes are fitted

All it takes to change thousands of lives is a well
