The Fellowship Day and Boarding Primary School is located in Bulyantetee, which is 4 kilometers outside the town of Lugazi in Uganda. The well that Drop in the Bucket would like to build there would provide water for the school and also the nearby villages of Bulyantetee, Kisasi, Sagazi, Mayindo and Dangala.
The St Kizito Nalinnya Primary School is in the village of Kiti, which is in the Masaka district of central Uganda. It is located between three villages, which will also have access to the water from the well. There are 800 pupils and 12 teachers at St. Kizito (330 boys and 470 girls), and of these children, 271 are orphans. There are 22 special needs children at the school.
The well will serve the school and the nine surrounding villages. The school has 910 boys and 844 girls, being taught by 12 teachers. There are 124 orphans and 11 special needs children. There is no current source of safe drinking water, the only water available is from the B'se river. In July, 2009 one of the second year girls at the school was getting water from the river.
This well will serve the school and three nearby villages. The school has 984 boys and 557 girls. It also has 9 full time teachers, which is really not very many for so many children. The nearest water source is 1km away and it is a river; there are currently no wells within walking distance from the school, so the river water is the only option.
The well will serve the 7 villages that surround the school. The school has 18 paid teachers and 6 volunteers; it has 1157 boys and 847 girls. Out of these, 149 of the children are orphans. The school's development plans include building temporary classrooms as the children are currently being educated under trees.
The Oloro Hgh Primary school was founded by local parents from the village. The school was taken over by the government in 1984, but the parents are still involved. There are 705 pupils that go to school there, 362 boys and 343 girls. Of these, 86 are orphans and 7 are special needs children.
The Adolo Primary School has 846 pupils, 438 girls and 408 boys. They have 15 teachers and 36 orphans. The nearest source of water is 3kms away. The school was originally set up by the Church of Uganda and the school was later taken over by the Government of Uganda.
In many countries in the developing world it is quite uncommon for girls to complete their Secondary Education. In fact in some of the areas where Drop in the Bucket is active like South Sudan only 2% of the girls get to complete a Primary Education. So when we were asked to work at a Secondary School for Girls we were very interested by the project.
This co-ed boarding school, centrally located near six villages, was started when villagers banded together to raise the funds to send some of their children to a teacher-training college. Once those students had completed their training, they returned to start this school which is now home to 650 children – 400 girls and 250 boys.
Mama Kevina is a Primary, Secondary and Nursery School. The school is both a boarding school and a day school and there is even a hospital on the school grounds that serves the school and the local community. The school is made up of about 80% orphaned children.
