drop in the bucket

One of the challenges that we faced with Drop in the Bucket is that without providing hygeine education and sanitation, just bringing clean water to these villages is not enough. To find a solution for this we decided to team up with another group that could help with these two things.

Drop in the Bucket in conjunction with two friends of ours Bill McKay and Hunter Beattie from Australia recently undertook a project in the remote Ugandan village of Mudodo. The eight hundred children that go to school there now have a permanent source of clean drinking water for the first time in the schools history . Bill and Hunter also enrolled the kids in a fun but comprehensive course in hygeine education that went along with the 20 squat toilets that they also installed.

A 4” to 6” sealed hole was drilled into the ground near the water hole and a childrens roundabout pump was installed that automatically pumps water into a reservoir tank as the children play on it. The water is then filtered and pumped into a tank that the villagers can draw water from. The excess water is used to power the flushing mechanism on the squat toilets. The output from the delayed septic is pathogen free and used to irrigate the schools garden. The combination of water, sanitation and hygeine education really does a lot to bring up the health of these children.
